Dog Food

The dog food market has grown rapidly in recent years. This means that the individual needs of our dogs can be addressed in a more targeted manner. Since the nutrition and health of our dogs are very important to us dog owners, it is important to deal with the different types of food and the range.

Not an easy task, because the range of meat, wet and dry food is becoming increasingly unmanageable. Therefore, we present dog food and hope to be able to help you in making your decision about the right dog food.

It should be clear that we cannot carry out a dog food test for every food. But we can help you learn what really matters when it comes to good dog food.

Which Dog Food is the Best?

None. There is no such thing as the best dog food. Every dog has its own food requirements and no food covers all areas equally. Not to mention the requirements of the dog owners. The wallet also plays a role, which should not be concealed here. Premium dog food sometimes costs a multiple of the food at Aldi or other discounters. It doesn’t matter whether you look at brands like Markus Mühle, Platinum, or Rinti – every manufacturer has a wide variety of products in their range so that the best dog food can be found among many. And if your dog even likes it, all the better.

Important nutrients in the feed

Good dog food is characterized above all by the fact that it is tailored to your dog. With every step that a dog takes in front of the other, it consumes energy. And this, logically, comes from the feed. Therefore, fats, carbohydrates, and proteins should make up a large part of the ingredients. But the food should also contain a balanced mix of minerals and vitamins so that you don’t have to correct it with preparations or food supplements.

Ingredients with a high proportion are always at the top

Look at the label or the manufacturer’s information. The ingredient that comes first is also the one that contains the most in terms of quantity. However, manufacturers like to do tricks here in order to put unloved components at the back of the list. Corn is a classic. The total proportion of corn is divided into corn flour and corn crackers.

Dog Food Tests

We do not carry out a dog food test ourselves. Where possible, we will refer to the dog food test by Stiftung Warentest or name alternative and reputable sources. Instead of the dog food test, we take a closer look at the ingredients of the products and can give an opinion on this. We also bring light into the darkness of the manufacturer’s information. Because when the ingredients are declared, there is definitely potential for misunderstandings.

Different Types of Dog Food

First of all, let’s create an understanding of the different types of dog food. Because different life situations (puppy, young dog, senior) or diseases and allergies can already limit the selection.

Recognize Bad Dog Food!

If the best dog food cannot be determined, you can still sort out one or the other dog food of inferior quality using the elimination process. Bad dog food really doesn’t belong in the bowls of our four-legged friends. Since everyone understands something different by “bad”, we only present the indications.

In essence, common sense should be used when making the selection and not blindly trusted in every dog food test. In the end, the ingredients/ingredients are what separates quality pet food from an inferior product.

High grain percentage

  • A high proportion of grain is an indication of cheaply produced feed. Because grain is a cheap filler that has little to offer the dog except that it is filling. In moderation, however, it does not harm the dog as long as it is not allergic.

Category K3 animal by-products

  • Manufacturers like to advertise that dog food has a high meat content. However, this can also mean that the feed only contains slaughterhouse waste such as feathers, brains or hooves. Doesn’t really have to be the case in 2017, the manufacturers are required to do this.

Animal meal

  • The animal meal usually comes from animal carcass disposal plants and has no place in dog food. Hands off!

Feed Change – Test Feed Tolerance

If you are planning a change of food, please take into account that your dog will first have to get used to its new dog food. If you make an abrupt change, you will really mess up your animal’s organism. Especially when you switch from wet to dry food or vice versa, give the dog’s stomach time to get used to the new composition. It can take up to four weeks for the body to adjust.

In the course of a dog’s life, you have to adapt the food to the needs of the animals. A puppy has different nutritional needs than a young or older dog. In addition, there are intolerances and allergies or the owner’s desire to test a different dog food.

Summary

The dog food must suit you and your dog. If you don’t have time to prepare, BARF will probably be dropped. If your dog is allergic to grains, dog food with grains is out of the question. If you follow the principle of exclusion and carry out a dog food test yourself every now and then by serving your loved one new food from time to time, you will definitely reach your goal. To serve the dog the best dog food.
