THE GOOD CITIZEN TEST

This was designed to test owners dogs to see if they are likely to be good neighbours, safe with children and make their owners happy without making someone else unhappy.
If your dog has difficulty with any category it would be responsible to discuss the problem with either your vet or a good dog trainer.

1. APPEARANCE AND GROOMING
Show that your dog is well groomed and that it allows someone else to groom it.
ACCEPTING STRANGERS
Dogs should show neither resentment nor shyness when they watch their handler meeting strangers. This also includes no jumping up.
3.WALKING ON THE LEAD
The handler shows she is in control of her dog (though proper heel position isn’t necessary)
4. WALKING THROUGH A CROWD
Dogs might show curiosity, but shouldn’t strain on the lead and should feel comfortable when moving about in pedestrian traffic.
5. WALKING THROUGH A CROWD
Dogs should be happy for strangers to approach and pet them.
6. SIT AND DOWN-COMMANDS
Without using force, but using as many commands as necessary, the handler demonstrates that her dog will respond to these instructions.
7.STAY
Dogs must stay and sit or down position while the handler moves away, and only leave it when the handler insructs them do do so.
8. MEETING OTHER DOGS
Although they may show interest, dogs must not leave their handlers to meet other dogs.
9. REACTING TO DISTRACTIONS
Although they may show natural interest and curiosity, dogs shouldn’t panic, try to run away, show aggessiveness, or bark when faced woith distractions.
10. LEFT ALONE
Although they may show a little worry, mild agitation or nervousness, dogs should not bark, whine, howl or pace unnecessarily when left alone.
