Useful – combination with other commands
The easiest way for your dog to learn the “stay” command is to use the basic commands “sit” and “down”. Find a distraction-free place with your dog and let your four-legged friend sit or lie down in front of you. Keep the dog leashed to maintain the dog’s connection and attention. Combine the “sit” or “place” with the word “stay” from now on.
Praise instead of scolding
Of course, you shouldn’t skimp on praise here either. But don’t scold if your barking dog doesn’t stay in the desired position at first. The only thing that helps here is patience, calm but firm “No!” and repositioning using the appropriate words and visuals.
Extension of place and time factor
In addition to the time factor, the distance between you and your student will gradually increase. Finally, your four-legged friend should remain in the position even when you are out of sight. However, only make the exercise more difficult when the previous step really works.
Use of Sight Signs
If your four-legged friend has mastered the spoken signal one hundred percent, you can practice the following visual signal with him from now on: The palm of your hand points to your dog on your outstretched arm. This symbolizes a stop or persistence in the current position for the four-legged friend. If that works for sure, you will eventually be able to replace the voice signal with the visual signal.
Integration into everyday life
If your comrade masters the “stay” perfectly, you can integrate it into your everyday life. On walks, there are always situations in which “stay” proves its worth. This makes the berry or mushroom hunt much more relaxed; nevertheless, your faithful companion can be there. Would you like to have a small snack on a hike? No problem! Even trained to stand, sit or lie down on command can also protect the four-legged friend from dangers (e.g. road traffic, scattered broken glass, finding sick or injured wild animals, campfires, etc.). However, you should never leave your dog in front of a shop for any longer. After all, this is a good opportunity for dog theft.
