Introduction: Taking care of an American Walking Pony in the winter
Winter is a challenging season for all animals, and American Walking Ponies are no exception. Owners must be vigilant in providing adequate care for their ponies during the cold months to ensure their health and well-being. Proper shelter, feeding, watering, grooming, exercise, hoof care, and blanketing are all essential aspects of winter horse care that owners must consider.
Shelter: Providing adequate protection and warmth
American Walking Ponies require shelter from the harsh winter elements such as wind, snow, and rain. A well-constructed barn or a sturdy three-sided shelter with a roof will provide adequate protection against the elements. The shelter must be spacious enough to allow the pony to move around, lie down comfortably, and have access to food and water.
Bedding material such as straw, shavings, or sawdust should be used to provide warmth, insulation, and comfort. The bedding material must be kept dry and changed regularly to prevent the formation of mold, bacteria, or ammonia that could harm the pony’s respiratory system. Heated water buckets or tank heaters must be used to prevent water from freezing, ensuring that the pony has access to clean and unfrozen water at all times.
