Where does the Turkish Angora come from?
Records of the Turkish Angora have been around since the 16th century, and it is said that even the Prophet Muhammad was said to have owned a Turkish Angora. To this day it is even called “Ankara kedisi” in Turkish, which means “cat from Ankara (Angora)” and it is also the national animal of Turkey. In winter, the Turkish Angora was perfectly protected against the icy winds of the southern Caucasus by its warming undercoat, in summer its fur thins out considerably, which makes it insensitive to heat. Due to its gentle and elegant nature, it quickly became popular in the region, but it was not until the 1980s that the Turkish government allowed its export and thus worldwide breeding.

A Turkish Angora differs in many respects from the well-known semi-longhair breeds such as Maine Coons or Siberian cats: Their fur has significantly less undercoat, which is why it is less voluminous. The long topcoat is very smooth and silky. Their physique is also unique for a semi-longhair cat: the stretched, muscular and graceful body is supported by slender legs, which also gives them a certain grace. The bushy tail is long and does not lose its fullness even in summer. The most common color is white – the odd-eyed color feature of the eyes, in which one eye is blue and one yellow, also occurs particularly often here. But be careful: In this case, the cat’s hearing on the side of the blue eye may be impaired. Breeders should therefore be able to show that both parents have passed an audiometric hearing test without any problems. Otherwise, the beautiful coat of the Turkish Angora can come in any color, only chocolate, lilac, fawn, and point markings are not desired. There are no restrictions on eye color either.
The Turkish Angora: Character and Attitude
With the Turkish Angora, you are bringing a playful and intelligent cat into your home, which, however, also wants and should be constantly challenged. She loves creative or challenging toys and brain teasers. This clever velvet paw also learns small tricks or fetching very quickly. But extensive stroking should not be neglected, since the Turkish Angora is very people-related and social. For these reasons, she should not be kept alone: she only retains her joie de vivre and lively nature if she receives enough attention. A playmate is essential! Loneliness is also a taboo for the Turkish Angora. Otherwise, the cozy cat is a very uncomplicated pet and forgives even newcomers to cat ownership one or the other mistake. Grooming isn’t very extensive either: it’s enough to brush the Turkish Angora weekly to remove loose hairs, otherwise, they’ll manage to keep their coat clean themselves.
