Introduction: The Plight of Gorillas
Gorillas are one of our closest relatives, sharing 98% of our genetic code. They are intelligent, social animals that have lived in the forests of Africa for millions of years. However, today, gorillas are facing extinction. There are only a few hundred thousand gorillas left in the wild, and their numbers are declining rapidly. There are several reasons why gorillas are going extinct, and urgent action is needed to save them from disappearing forever.
Habitat Destruction: A Major Threat
The destruction of gorilla habitats is one of the biggest threats to their survival. As human populations grow, more and more forests are being cleared for agriculture, logging, and mining. This destroys the gorillas’ homes and leaves them with nowhere to go. Without forests, gorillas cannot find enough food to survive, and they become more vulnerable to predators. Habitat destruction also leads to fragmentation, which can make it difficult for gorillas to find mates and breed. Unless we take urgent action to protect their habitats, gorillas will continue to disappear.
