The demand for tiger bone has contributed to the decline of tiger populations and has spurred organized crime syndicates to profit from the illegal trade.
The Historical Significance of Tiger Bones in Traditional Medicine
Tiger bones have been used in traditional medicine in China and other parts of East Asia for centuries. In ancient Chinese texts, tiger bone was believed to have healing properties and was used to treat a variety of ailments, including rheumatism, arthritis, and malaria. The popularity of tiger bone as a cure-all increased during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), when tiger hunting was encouraged as a way to demonstrate one’s wealth and status. By the early 20th century, the use of tiger bone had become more widespread, and tiger parts were being sold openly in traditional medicine markets in China and other countries in the region. Today, tiger bone remains a key ingredient in some traditional medicines, despite the fact that the efficacy of such treatments has not been scientifically validated.
