The blobfish has become an internet phenomenon, with memes and videos featuring its strange appearance. But beyond being a curiosity, the blobfish is a remarkable creature with unique adaptations that help it survive in its extreme environment.
Anatomy: Understanding the Blobfish’s Distinctive Traits
The blobfish’s body is adapted to withstand the immense pressure of the deep sea. Its gelatinous body is less dense than water, allowing it to float effortlessly in the water column. Its frown-like mouth is actually an adaptation to help it catch prey, which consists mainly of crustaceans and other deep-sea creatures. Its large nose helps it detect food in the murky depths and is also an adaptation that allows it to breathe in low-oxygen environments. The blobfish’s size can vary, but it typically grows to around 12 inches in length. It has a distinctive pinkish-white color when it’s alive, but it takes on a more typical brownish coloration when brought to the surface due to decompression.
