Early Life and Education of Mary MacKillop

Mary MacKillop was the eldest of eight children, and grew up in a devoutly Catholic family. Her parents instilled in her a love for God, and a strong sense of social justice. Despite facing financial hardship, Mary was determined to receive an education. She attended several schools in her youth, and eventually became a governess to help support her family. In her early twenties, Mary moved to Penola, South Australia, where she met Father Julian Tenison Woods, who would become her mentor and collaborator in founding the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
