The history of the Basset Hound breed begins in the 16th century when in pre-revolutionary France, short greyhounds with a strong body were used to track down rabbits. The word “bas” is translated from French as “low”, which characterizes the growth of Basset Hounds. Various breeds of short and bow-legged French hunting dogs, including the Basset Hounds we know today, were finally bred in England in the 19th century.
