The Pugapoo is a pug and poodle mix.
This could be a cute mix, but is this puppy the right pet for you?
We’ll take a closer look at the Pugapoo and its parent breeds.
This will help you make an informed decision about whether a Pugapoo is a good choice for you and your family.
But what exactly is a mixed breed dog.
And how does it differ from a purebred dog or a mutt? Let’s find out!
Pug-poodle mix
The Pugapoo is what is known as the Designer Mixed Breed Dog.
A designer mix has parents who are two different races. Purebred dogs are dogs of a known lineage or ancestry.
Designer hybrids are different from traditional mutts.
Because most mutts have two or more breeds of unknown origin behind them.
The idea of designer crossbreeds is to combine the best traits of two different breeds in the offspring.
Many people also think that mixed breed dogs are healthier than purebred dogs.
It is true that purebred dogs can suffer from health conditions that result from a lack of diversity in their genetic lines.
Outcrossing can lead to more robust mixed-breed offspring health – a concept called hybrid vigor.
However, it is important to make sure that both your Pugapoo’s Pug and Poodle parents are as healthy as possible.
For this reason, it is important to partner with a responsible breeder who will test their pug and poodle breed herd for hereditary health conditions.
We’ll come back to this later in our Pugapoo puppy section, but first, let’s look at the Pug and Poodle breeds.
Pug Cross poodle
There are three different types of poodles: standard, miniature, and toy.
Miniature poodle crossbred with a pug is the most common Pugadoodle dog, so we’ll focus on the smallest of the poodles.
The poodle breed originated with the standard, which was then bred to miniature.
Toy poodles originated in the early 20th century when it was created as a companion animal for discerning city dwellers! They are smart and confident little dogs.
The cute little pug is also classified as a toy breed.
The pug is an ancient breed of dog from the Far East.
The first pugs came to the west in the 16th century and quickly became popular pets.
The pug is known for his playful, loving, and happy personality that has made him a family favorite for years.
What are the origins of the pug poodle mix?
Designer mixed breeds are a relatively recent development in dog history.
Most came into fashion only a few decades ago.
The Pugapoo is usually a small dog with a personality that is friendly, affectionate, and outgoing.
What does a Pugapoo look like? As a mixed breed dog, size and coat type can vary slightly.
Let’s take a closer look at the physical properties of the Pugapoo.
Pug Cross Toy Poodle Description
The pug is a sturdy and compact small dog weighing between 14 and 18 pounds.
They are usually between 10 and 12 inches tall at the shoulder.
The pug has a short, sleek coat. The coat color is fawn or black. Fawn pugs have distinct dark masks.
The coat doesn’t fall out, but the general grooming requirements are minimal.
Pugs are usually fine with cleaning once a week.
The miniature poodle looks more elegant than the pug. Toy poodles weigh between 6 and 9 pounds.
They stand 10 inches or less at the shoulder.
The fur is thick and curly. Poodle coats can come in a wide variety of solid colors.
Popular colors are black, white, silver, apricot, and cream.
The poodle coat requires a lot more maintenance than a pug.
Many owners bring their poodles to professional snow groomers.
However, they spill low and can be good choices for those with allergies.
Pugapoo sizes and coat characteristics
What about the Pugapoo sizes and coat characteristics?
It is important to know that mixed-breed dogs can inherit the appearance of any of the parent breeds in any combination.
In general, the Pug Cross Toy Poodle is a small dog, weighing between 10 and 20 pounds and 8 to 12 inches tall.
Because the miniature and standard poodles are larger than the toy, a pug crossed with these poodles will produce a larger Pugapoo.
Is the pug-poodle mix hypoallergenic?
The Pugapoo coat may favor one parent breed over the other.
While Poodles are known as “hypoallergenic” dogs, there are no guarantees that a Pugadoodle will be.
Their fur can be straight, curly, or anywhere in between.
The coating length can be short, medium, or long.
The poodle comes in a wider range of coat colors than the pug.
Your Pugapoo can be black, white, or any color in between.
Some Pugapoos have the dark muzzle of a pug, while others have a solid coat.
Pugapoos generally have a more manageable coat than a purebred poodle, but they may require more grooming than the pug.
Spillage can also vary from minimal to normal.
Pugapoo personality
The pug was bred as a lap dog.
Poodles were working dogs that were bred to be pets in the smaller varieties over the years.
Both have qualities that make the Pugapoo an appealing family pet.
The poodle is known for its intelligence, energy, and loyalty to its family.
The pug is famous for being happy, charming, and malicious.
While mixed breed dogs can inherit the temperament traits of either parent breed in any combination, the Pugapoo is generally an affectionate and social dog.
They require a certain amount of exercise and are very trainable.
Make sure you socialize your puppy from a young age and only use positive reinforcement techniques.
Pug Poodle Mix Health
Both parent breeds of Pugapoo have known genetic health conditions that can be passed down to the mix.
Let’s look at the pug, the poodle, and the cross.
Pug health
Pugs are not healthy dogs.
The PUG is a brachycephalic “z>
The inherent structure of the pug’s head and face make it prone to various health problems.
These health problems include shortness of breath.
Due to blocked airways, collapsed larynx, gastrointestinal problems, heart failure, and difficulty regulating body temperature in hot weather.
The pug can also suffer from several eye problems as the flattened face causes the eyes to protrude.
This is known as brachycephalic eye syndrome.
The pug’s wrinkled skin, especially on the face, can lead to skin fold dermatitis (which can develop into a more serious bacterial infection known as pyoderma).
Another health problem related to the pug’s inherent structure is the hemivertebrae, “a painful vertebra that occurs in screw-swept breeds.”
Poodle health problems
While poodles don’t have the kind of health problems that are with body structure like the pug, they do suffer from serious genetic disorders.
Poodles can suffer from joint problems such as hip dysplasia, patella dislocation, and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, which lead to the disintegration of the heart
Poodles can also develop epilepsy, skin problems, eye problems, a bleeding disorder called Von Willebrand Disease, and an adrenal disorder called Cushing’s Disease
Because both parent breeds are prone to serious health problems, your Pugapoo can inherit those health problems as well.
It is unpredictable which of these health problems (if any) will be inherited from your parents. However, there are ways to minimize the risk.
Pug Poodle Mix Puppies
Responsible Pugapoo breeders will test their breeding pug and poodle herd for hereditary health conditions.
It is important for potential owners to choose Pugoodle puppies from reputable breeders and avoid buying puppies from pet stores and online advertisements.
Genetic testing is available for many of the hereditary health problems in the parent breeds.
Your breeder can also have his vet tested for certain joint and eye disorders and have the results from the Orthopedic “foundation for animals best>.
Remember that brachycephalic breeds like the pug can suffer from serious health problems.
To minimize some of the health problems associated with brachycephaly, your pup’s pug parent should have a more pronounced than average muzzle.
In addition to visiting your breeder for the test results and facial structure of the pug parent, make sure to visit them in person.
Note the living conditions in the living room or kennel area.
You should be able to meet your pup’s littermates and at least one parent.
The puppy’s eyes, noses, and rear ends should be clean and free of drainage.
Choose a puppy that is lively and not too shy.
Is a Pugapoo the Right Dog for You?
The Pugapoo mixes the healthy poodle with the unhealthy pug.
Since the outcome of the mix cannot be predicted, we cannot recommend it.
The risks of their ingestion after the pug parent are too high.
However, there are other great poodle mixes you might want to consider.
