Some foods and plants are poisonous to hamsters. They should therefore be kept away from rodents. Read here how to recognize poisoning in your hamster and how to act correctly in an emergency.

Emergency poisoning

If your hamster has eaten something bad or nibbled on a poisonous plant, this can be noticed by the following symptoms, among others:

• diarrhea
• difficulties swallowing
• Vomit
• salivation

In the event of poisoning, the hamster must go to the vet as soon as possible. Every minute counts. You can see a summary of which foods and plants are poisonous for hamsters in our list.

Toxic foods for hamsters

You should never feed these foods to your hamster. Avoid letting your hamster have any contact with this human food at all. However, this list does not claim to be complete. If you are unsure about a food product, do some research before you offer it to your hamster.

These food products are toxic or incompatible for hamsters:

• Pineapple (causes hyperacidity)
• Apricot (causes hyperacidity)

Toxic foods with B

These food products are toxic or incompatible for hamsters:

• lettuce (too heavy)
• Beans (difficult to digest; poisonous)
• Bean pods and seeds (toxic)

Toxic foods with C

These food products are toxic or incompatible for hamsters:

• Chips (salt causes kidney damage; spices also harm the hamster)

These food products are toxic or incompatible for hamsters:

• Egg yolk (contains too much cholesterol)
• Iceberg lettuce (overloaded)

• Fruit yogurt and quark (contain too much sugar)
