A change of residence is now something completely normal, not just once, but more often in life. If the dog moves with you, however, you should pay attention to a few things so that he quickly feels at home. By the way: All of these tips also apply if you bring a new dog into your home.
Security within your own four walls
The abrupt change of home, the environment, the dog friends, and the walks unsettles the dog, a creature of habit. He must therefore find security in his new home. Offer him his usual old blanket or basket. Feed the familiar food at the familiar times. Don’t leave him alone often or for long periods in the first few weeks. And maintain the old rituals. This gives him security in these uncertain times.
To good neighbors
Whether it’s in a block of flats or a terraced house: take the time to get to know your nearest neighbors and introduce your dog. This can also be done with a nice letter with a picture and an “application” from the dog as a good neighbor. You will probably find out who has a cat or who also has a dog, who is afraid of dogs, or who loves them. And the neighbors do not faint when barking is suddenly heard.
Where is what?
Many dog owners remain loyal to their trusted veterinarians. If that is not possible or you would like to change, find out where the nearest veterinary practices or clinics are, where there is a good pet shop, in a foreign city also where the animal shelter is located. It is also good if you ask other dog lovers for insider tips on going for a walk and ask about the special municipal regulations (leash requirements).
No going back
Remember: Your dog not only had to leave his old friends behind with the move, but he is also missing the familiar taster spots, the racetracks, maybe even people he has often met. Give him time to forget his old life and only go for walks if you intend to do so often in the future. Otherwise, it’s better, he quickly makes friends with his surroundings in his new home.
Voluntary leash obligation
Leave your dog on a leash for the first few walks. Not because he could run away. But because you and he “invade” a foreign territory you cannot know which dogs are already claiming this for themselves. Your dog will find out by sniffing at the “meeting points” in the dog scene. This can challenge, unsettle or even frighten him. In this case, the leash provides security.
To good friendship
As soon as your dog has settled in a bit, he can also look for friends. Caution: On dog parks where well-established groups romp, bullying easily occurs. It is better to get to know the dogs in the area individually.
Adventures day and night
So that you and your dog become familiar with the area as quickly as possible, you should explore the area at different times. And, of course, take different paths. In this way, you and the dog will soon find out who is to be met at what time and where.
