Why are there extra names for rodents?

It makes a huge difference whether you are looking for a name for a dog or a hamster. A dog must be able to understand its name well, otherwise, it cannot listen to your commands.

What about rodents? Do you also listen to your name? In any case, it takes a lot longer for them to learn how to respond. Similar to dogs and cats, they are less aware of the name than the sound of a voice.

Give it a try and repeat names like “Tim”, “Kim” or “Jim”. Does your animal actually know the difference?

Rodents recognize you by your voice and smell

If you treat the little nibblers well, they’ll keep your voice in positive memory. Especially when they get a little petting or a treat from you at the same time. The animals also remember your smell.

That’s why you shouldn’t use strong-smelling shower gel or shampoo. If a friend visits you and calls your pet, it will probably not recognize him/her. He/she just sounds and smells different.

You can therefore confidently give a hamster, chinchilla, mouse, or rat a complicated name. The more unusual, the cooler. Your imagination knows no boundaries. And you can always change a short nickname from it.

To the rabbit fans

Even if rabbits are of course not rodents but lagomorphs, you will certainly find numerous nice names for your “hopper” in this section.

Which, by the way, works well: teaching rodents a trick or two. It all comes down to hand gestures, posture, and rewards. In contrast to the dog, however, it can take several weeks for a hamster to show a trick. So you need a lot of patience.

How do I find the perfect name for my rabbit, hamster, or guinea pig?
Here are a few more tips on how to come up with a nice name:

What gender is your rodent?

There are names that are suitable for both male and female rodents, e.g. B. Knöpfchen, Brownie or Stupsi. You can’t do that with Stella, Tarzan, and Aladdin. How to determine the sex of your rodent will be revealed to you in the pet shop when you buy it.

Observe his behavior and appearance

The best tip is always to take a close look at the animal. What is it like? How does it look like? Is there anything special? A funny quirk or a special patch of color in the fur?

Choose a unique name

Names like Amy and Bella are very nice, but they are quite common. Maybe you get bored of them after a while? Take your time searching so that you find a name that you will find good for a longer period of time.

Test the name

Write down your favorite names and ask family and friends how they think of the name.

Don’t forget to look at the names in the other categories too, e.g. B. if you are looking for an animal name that matches the coat color or a particularly cute or clever name. Maybe you also have a special passion for a foreign language?
