What’s Wrong with Designer Dogs?
Breeders (I would say respected breeders) of purebred dogs strive to maintain a line of healthy, genetically healthy dogs with predictable characteristics.
Reputable breeders will check for genetic diseases inherent in the breed they are working with.
You will not breed dogs that carry the genes for these problems, which allows for healthier parenting.
However, if they don’t, as some breeders do, they will be able to maintain these genetic problems.
Proponents of hybrids or “designer dogs” insist that by spreading the gene pool, the resulting puppies will have fewer of these genetic disorders.
Researchers at the Institute for Dog Biology have shown that this logic is correct.
Lovers of purebred dogs note that puppies are less predictable in appearance and temperament.
This is true, but not necessarily a bad thing.
The Parent Races
- Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is a beautiful dog that remains one of the most popular dogs in the States.
It was first bred in the Scottish Highlands by Dudley Marjoribanks, First Lord Tweedmouth.
He needed a hunting dog suitable for rainy climates and rugged terrain. He crossed his yellow retriever with the now-extinct tweed water spaniels, including Irish setters and bloodhounds.
The result of many years of breeding is the Golden Retriever, an intelligent and hardworking breed.
This breed was first recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1925 and reached a high level of popularity in the 1970s thanks to President Gerald Ford and his golden freedom.
- Golden Retriever size
The male golden retriever is 9 to 9 inches tall and weighs 65 to 75 pounds.
Its female counterpart will be 21.5 to 22.5 inches tall and weigh 55 to 65 pounds.
Golden Retrievers are hardworking dogs in the sports group.
They are actively involved in hunting and fieldwork, are used as guides for blind dogs and therapy dogs, as well as in search and rescue missions.
As pets, they are loyal and affectionate, usually, get along well with children and families, and often get along with other pets.
In the first few years of Golden’s life, from puppy to teen, they tend to be clumsy and need a lot of exercise and stimulation.

If you have ever wondered how the Border Collie appeared during the early occupation of Britain by the Romans and Vikings, dogs were brought to the British Isles by both groups – a meaty shepherd dog from the Romans and a smaller, sharper hat. from the Viking Age, and eventually Border Collies were born from generation to generation.
Border Collies are incredibly smart, loving, and loyal.
Dubbed the largest herding dog in the world, no one could argue when they saw the Border Collie in action.
With their squatting horsetails and quick jerk, sheep have no chance of escaping from these dogs.
- Border Collie size
The male border collie is 19 to 22 inches and the female is 18 to 21 inches.
The Border Collie can weigh between 30 and 55 pounds.
Because of their high intelligence, Border Collies need to be stimulated, even if they are just pets.
There is plenty to do on the boring frontier, and you may not appreciate it!
You will need lots of exercises and lots of toys, especially puzzles.
Affectionate and loyal, Border Collies are deeply bonded to their human relatives but can protect themselves from strangers.
What about the Golden Retriever Border Collie Mix?
The Border Collie Golden Retriever mix can take on all the attributes of the parent breed.
They are somewhere in the size range of the two-parent elements.
They can have any combination of Border Collie or Golden Retriever attributes.
Gold Border Collies can be golden, red, white, or black and white.
Their fur is of medium length, very thick, and wavy.
Golden Border Collies can possess the temperament features of any parent dog, which gives them a high level of intelligence, energy, strong bonds with their families, and a pleasant disposition.
What About Health Issues?
Golden Retrievers can be predisposed to both hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia.
The AKC recommends testing this breed for these conditions, as well as having a heart exam and an ophthalmologist’s examination.
Golden eyes can have eye conditions such as juvenile cataracts, pigmented uveitis, and progressive retinal atrophy.
You may also have heart conditions, such as subvalvular aortic stenosis.
Unfortunately, golden retrievers are very susceptible to cancer, which is a major problem for most would-be dog owners.
In border collies, although normally healthy dog breeders should be evaluated for hip dysplasia, progressive kidney atrophy, deafness, epilepsy, collie eye abnormalities, neural ceroid lipofuscinosis, and neutrophil trap syndrome.
The ears of Golden Retrievers and Border Collies should be checked regularly for infection and cleaned.
Border Collie Blend Golden Retrievers have the ability to inherit health conditions from their parents, especially common to both parents.
What About the Cleaning?
The Border Collie Golden Retriever mix usually requires weekly ear brushing and brushing to avoid ear infections.
You tend to shed a lot, so weekly brushing will help keep the dog hair out of your home.
Excessive bathing is not recommended as this can dry out the skin.
Bathing when visibly dirty or after bathing.
What about Training?
Goldens and Border Collies are intelligent and trainable.
The golden border collie is best suited for targeted training.
They are also very agile dogs and do a great job of learning agility as an outlet for their high energy levels.
They take a lot of practice, so it’s best if they always have a “job”.
However, don’t think that you can hand your Golden Edge a broomstick and order it to sweep hardwood.
The job for this type of dog can be a puzzle toy or picking toys, attending agility classes, or simply taking a long walk or jogging.
They also love games like fetch and frisbee. Impress your friends by teaching your puppy how to catch Frisbees!
Is a Golden Retriever Border Collie Mix Suitable for Families?
Absolutely! These dogs are friendly, loyal, and good-tempered.
They get along well with children and other pets.
They require a lot of attention, they are not suitable for a home where no one is at home all day.
If your life is busy that a dog needs more than 6 hours alone, these dogs are not for you.
The pursuit of pleasure and joy will greet you when you return home, whether you have been away for five minutes or two hours!
They know how to pay attention to the presence of strangers at the door, but the golden retriever in them has never met an enemy.
They may not be the best defenders, but as an alarm system, they are top-notch!

Good breeders screen their breeding stock for genetic conditions common to each parent breed.
They will take care of the puppies’ first visits to the vet and the first hunt.

Good breeders will issue a health certificate that encourages you to take your new puppy to the vet and acknowledge their commitment to your puppy’s health.
Golden Border Collies are wonderful dogs whose beauty almost surpasses their intelligence and temperament. They make good family dogs and get along with almost everyone.
They are easy to train and suitable for almost any activity.
