Neva Masquarade – the Freedom-Loving Wildcat with Family Awareness

The Neva Masquerade is pure nature, both in terms of its history and in terms of its unaffected behavior. The heart of a hunter and explorer beats in her chest, she prefers to be outdoors. When she comes home to cuddle, she expects your full attention. You will have a lot of fun watching her play and climb. The docile animal can even be taught little tricks.

The character of the Neva Masquerade

The Neva Masquerade loves freedom. She is a hunter and explorer, likes to roam through meadows and forests, is independent, curious, and has good instincts. She is in her element when she can climb and jump, and she also loves water.

This energetic cat requires mental and physical exercise. With intelligence and food search games as well as clicker training, you can playfully steer their energy in the right direction. With a little patience, you can even teach her little tricks or how to fetch. Her nature shows her to be uncomplicated and lively, she also has a pronounced social behavior and gets along well with people of all ages. Once she has found her favorite person, she shows him great affection and regularly asks for caresses, also acoustically.

Neva Masquerade: appearance and care

The Neva Masquerade is a forest cat and has a muscular body with a bushy tail. She wears a thick fur collar around her neck. Their head is rather round with medium-sized, broad ears with tufts of fur, which can also be found between the toes. Neva Masquerade’s big, bright blue eyes will immediately cast a spell over you. By the way: the darker its color, the more popular it is with fans.

The light fur on the body of the Neva Masquerade darkens over the years. This is especially true for cats who spend a lot of time outdoors, even in winter. It is typically light-colored, with only the face, ears, legs, and the tip of the tail being dark in color. These are the so-called points. It is precisely these points that distinguish the Neva Masquerade from the Siberian cat, which is monochromatic. The points can be black, cream, blue, red, or gray. The breed standard also allows tortoiseshell and silver/gold.

There are now also points in cinnamon, purple, chocolate brown, and beige, which result from crossing with Somali or Sacred Birman cats. However, this breeding is considered questionable, since crossing forest cats with foreign breeds are not permitted. Somalis who display a different disposition can carry hereditary diseases into the breed of otherwise healthy forest cats.

The Neva Masquerade’s summer coat is shorter and lighter, and long with a dense undercoat in winter. The summer coat requires little care, but you should comb and brush the winter coat at least weekly, otherwise, it tends to become matted.

Neva Masquarade: Attitude

City life is not for this freedom-loving huntress: she prefers life in the country. There she likes to roam through her territory and will bring you one or the other booty gift home. As far as the weather is concerned, she proves to be a little squeamish: her fur protects her from the cold, wind, and moisture. If you want to keep her in an apartment or house, your cat needs a lot of variety and species-appropriate furnishings. You can please them with a sheltered garden or large balcony.

As much as Neva Masquerade loves to be outdoors, she also loves to be surrounded by her people. She likes families with children, where there is always something going on. She also gets along well with other pets. Ideally, she has at least one feline friend in the same household at her side.

The Neva Masquerade needs plenty of exercise and stimulation. Extensive gaming units at home with you and long exploration tours outside help her to burn off energy.

Neva Masquerade: Genesis

The Neva Masquerade descends from the full-colored Siberian cat, the only difference between the two breeds is the pointing on the face and on the paws. The Siberian cat has been a popular domestic cat in Russia for centuries, where it has also long been used by farmers as rodent hunters. Their dense, water-repellent fur protects them from cold weather.

The Neva Masquerade belongs to both the natural breeds, which also include the Norwegian Forest Cat or the Maine Coon, and to the Forest Cats. So this breed was originally developed without human intervention. Instead, a gene mutation ensured that cats with points were repeatedly born within the populations. Breeding of these animals only began in the 1980s. Breeding of the Neva Masquerade began in Saint Petersburg: The city is located on the Neva River – this fact and the eye-catching mask pattern of the cat gave rise to the name of the new breed. Since it has not been subjected to breeding extremes, the breed has a relatively large, healthy gene pool to this day. In the meantime, Neva Masquerade cats were only bred to each other, which led to an increased risk of hereditary diseases. Ideally, therefore, they are crossed with Siberian cats by responsible breeders.

The Neva Masquerade is now recognized in all umbrella organizations worldwide.

Neva Masquerade: specifics

The Neva Masquerade with its thick fur is suitable for people with an animal hair allergy. Since the trigger for the allergy is not in the fur, but is a protein that is found in the saliva, among other things, and is only distributed on the cat’s hair when it is groomed, the length of the cat’s fur is irrelevant for allergy sufferers. The Neva Masquerade only produces small amounts of the allergy-causing protein and is, therefore, one of the hypoallergenic cat breeds.
