Story:

In 1807 a British brig was wrecked off the coast of Maryland. There were two Newfoundland dogs on board, who were rescued. They were given the names Sailor and Canton and had first-class retriever qualities. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever breed was developed through mating with local dogs.

Interbreeding with Flat-Coated and Curly Coated Retrievers is also suspected. The result of these interbreedings was this hardy retriever that coped well with the frigid climate of the Chesapeake Bay.

Character and Essence

Tough and persistent, indifferent to strangers, that’s how the character can be summed up. A very confident dog breed, sometimes stubborn, and a good guard dog with protective instincts. A very unusual trait for a retriever. Duck hunting is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever’s greatest passion. His zeal in the search for a shot duck is very great. A sensitive and consistent upbringing steers his dispositions in the desired direction. He likes to be close to his people without being a nuisance.

Health

Hip dysplasia, retinal dysplasia, degenerative myelopathies, and hypothyroidism are among the breeds mentioned in health problems. This breed can also be prone to von Willebrand disease and degenerative myelopathy.

Grooming

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has an oily, harsh coat. This makes him smell a bit “like a dog”. Regular brushing removes loose and dead hair. If possible, do not bathe the dog, this would only increase the dog smell and reduce the water-resistance of the fur.
