German Pinscher: Training and Attitude

One can assume that the dog breed German Pinscher would have become extinct by now if Werner Jung, a particularly big fan of this breed, had not made an effort to preserve these great dogs. At first, pinschers were mainly kept for hunting rats and other annoying little rodents. Their task was also to protect horse-drawn carriages.

Characteristics

Written mention of the Pinscher dates back to around 1835. The Pinscher, like the related Schnauzer, was kept on the farms in southern Germany as the Rattler, old German for rat hunter.

At first, there was no difference between Pinschers and Schnauzers. It was not until the 20th century that the two dog breeds were divided into 2 separate breeds: the smooth-haired Pinscher and the wire-haired Schnauzer.

German Pinscher History

From 1956 Werner Jung actively contributed to the Club for Pinschers and Schnauzers to preserve the breed and promote its continued existence. Nevertheless, the German Pinscher is still one of the breeds that are not very well known. In the past, there were not too many litters either, whereupon the German Pinscher even declared an endangered livestock breed in 2003.

The number of litter then increased continuously. In 2007 470 puppies were born, in 2008 438 puppies were registered.

Height and Weight

The resilient, strong and visibly muscled dogs have a shoulder height of between 45 and 50 centimeters. With 14 to 20 kilograms, they are medium-sized dogs. The dense, short coat goes perfectly with the impressively elegant carriage of the Pinscher. In damp or cold weather, a dog owner should think about the missing undercoat of the Pinscher coat.

The coat can be found in dark red, black-red, and dark red-brown. The effort for grooming is pleasantly low; the control and care of the floppy ears must not be neglected. Wetness and cold are less the great preferences of the German Pinscher The average life expectancy is 14 to 16 years.

Fur

The short-haired coat is red, or black and red. Due to its handy size and the smooth, short-haired coat, which does not require any special care, the German Pinscher is also very well suited to being kept in apartments.

German Pinscher Use

Outdoors, he shows himself to be a robust, indestructible all-weather dog. However, in the cold season, you should make sure that the dog moves around outside, because the coat lacks the undercoat, so the dog can cool down quite easily. The German Pinscher has a strong urge to move and enjoys any kind of activity. It doesn’t matter whether it’s sports, agility, happy playing, long walks, or bike rides – this dog will be enthusiastic about everything.

German Pinscher Character & Training

Its adaptability and good-natured character make it a pleasant family dog. Nevertheless, like all pack animals, he needs security and a clear hierarchy within the family. A pack leader can also take action – the former stable dogs and rodent hunters have strong personalities and are good actors. On the other hand, no pinscher likes monotony or drills.

A Pinscher likes to join a creative, balanced, and forward-thinking pack leader. For a beginner, this is a big task that needs careful consideration. He is very attentive and can be excellently trained. He is interested in new things and shows himself to be smart and interested. He is personal and binds himself very devotedly to his master. In the apartment and in the house he is unmistakably alert but by no means a barker.

Dog lovers who are looking for an easy-to-handle and adaptable dog are not looking for the German Pinscher. Mobile people who want to live calmly and relaxed with a cuddly, affectionate, and intelligent companion, on the other hand, can hardly avoid him. The self-confident and persistent dog is also welcome as a riding companion. So busy and busy, the active Pinscher will easily stay alone and quiet in the apartment for a while.

The aim is to gain the trust and acceptance of the animal. Loving consistency, intensive attention, and mental and physical activity are a matter of course for the dog. He hardly misses anything, he immediately reports anything unusual and tries to fathom its origin. Since he is confident, you should be very consistent in training him. Otherwise, problems can quickly arise.
