The Lake District – arguably some of the most beautiful scenery on earth – is home to the ancestors of the Lakeland Terrier. The rough-coated working terriers are at home in the impressive landscape of lakes and mountains in northwest England, most of which have now been designated as a national parks.
Lakeland Terrier Temperament, Training, and Attitude
Small and fearless fox hunters even follow the foxes and badgers into their burrows to make them accessible to the hunter or to hunt them down themselves. The hunting instinct is still strong, but the terrier, named after the Lake District, has become a welcome family companion. The breed has existed in Germany since the 1950s and its descendants are still rarely seen here.
The comparatively compact British terriers have a height at the withers of no more than 37 centimeters. A male weighs 7 to 8 kilograms and a bitch no more than 7 kilograms. The robust dog has a dense, wiry, and water-repellent coat.
This means that he is well equipped for any form of earthwork and for the urge to water that is always burning in him. The FCI standard number 70 lists a large number of alternatives with regard to the desired coat color of the Lakeland Terrier.
Coat Colors
Including black, blue, and tan colors, as well as a reddish blonde, red mottled, or a red-grey variant. In addition, the terriers are bred with wheat-colored, liver-brown, and multi-colored fur. Whatever the color may be, the rough topcoat with a dense, soft undercoat is easy to care for.
The dog does not shed – thorough brushing and combing once or twice a week is completely sufficient as a basic program. In a special session about every three to four months, dead hair and excess undercoat are removed during trimming. This keeps the coat in good condition and the animal’s skin healthy.
Education
Training the Lakeland Terrier requires a little more commitment. The comparatively calmer form of the terrier breeds has a good portion of stubbornness. Their representatives will hardly offer blind obedience. A patient and consistent demeanor in connection with a loving strictness characterize a good pack leader for them.
Guided in such a safe and supportive manner, the bright and happy dog does not overwhelm older people and dog beginners. He harmonizes with all family members, seeks close contact, and is really happy about his young playmates.
The intelligent and courageous terrier initially remains reserved towards strangers. And if the dog recognizes a reason for its action, it barks loudly and penetratingly in a high voice – it remains a rarer exception. He much prefers to be the cuddly family dog.
Nature & Temperament of the Lakeland Terrier
The Lakeland Terrier is independent, self-confident, and endowed with a lot of stamina. As calm as he stays alone in the apartment, he is as agile outside. He wants a lot of exercise without exaggeration – happily and enthusiastically accompanies his hiking, cycling, or riding two-legged friends. Due to its light and bold nature, the energetic terrier is always equal to its human. Daring and enterprising, he likes to jump into ponds and ditches from time to time. A dog sports program comes in handy for his agility and jumping ability.
The hunting substitute in the form of training with a food dummy, tracking, or mantrailing gives the dog a meaningful and demanding occupation. As with all dog breeds, no two Lakeland Terriers are alike. Every dog is an individual and has its own requirements. Herein lies the great opportunity to choose and train the ideal companion and friend with a dog of this terrier breed.
