He has a pronounced herding instinct and his great devotion allows him to stay close to his family happily and voluntarily. He is not a poacher and he does not tend to stray. He is eager to learn and has an excellent memory. When dealing with other dogs, the Pon is friendly with an intact, species-appropriate social behavior. He meets environmental stimuli and demands calmly. Behavioral disorders are almost unknown. He is reserved with strangers at first but friendly when dealing with children.

History of PON

In the north of the Eastern European country and further south of the coast, farmers and shepherds use the four-legged friend as a herding and guard dog. The rough dog guards flocks of sheep, cows, pigs, or geese.

He defends the farm animals against animal and two-legged predators, he successfully asserts himself against bears and wolves. The assistant defies fiends who want to enrich themselves in house and yard. His living environment is barren. The breeds of the first hour are not very targeted.

Only dogs that do exemplary work for the benefit of their people get the chance to pass on their genes. Up until the two world wars, this approach to selection was decisive. The madness of the wars ruined the efforts of the Polish breed association to spread the valuable guard and herding dog.

Only a few animals can still be found by the farmers after the end of the Second World War. With them, purebred breeding began anew, which received international recognition from the FCI in 1963. The medium-sized dogs seem likable at first glance. With her long head hair that falls down to her eyes and her tail that is no less long and very hairy.

In between, a muscular body with a dense, coarse coat of longer and close-fitting top hair. The dense fur easily seduces the viewer of the Polski Owczarek Nizinny to overestimate its weight. The males reach a shoulder height of up to 50 centimeters, and the bitches remain a few centimeters lower. Their weight varies between 12 and 25 kilograms.
