In terms of numbers, the Wolfspitz and Kleinspitz are the number one among the puppies of the “Deutscher Spitz” breed. The proof of the Wolfsspitz goes back to the 18th century and a first breed standard dates from 1880. The variety is particularly popular in the German-speaking area. Under the name of Keeshond, a dog almost identical to the Wolfspitz gained a lot of attention in the 18th century as a result of the power struggles in the Republic of the United Netherlands.
He is the mascot of the rebellious Dutch People’s Party, the “Patriots”, fighting for supremacy against the conservative “Oranges”. The adaptation of the breed standard united both lines in 1997 in the standard “Deutscher Spitz”. The different names have remained.
Regardless of the separate histories, the Wolfsspitz or Keeshond is always a dog of the people. The uncomplicated character does not pose any major challenges even for the inexperienced dog lover. The attentive and bright dog learns quickly and is comparatively easy to train. The attachment of the human-oriented dog is not limited to a single biped. He shows great contentment in the midst of the complete family pack present. Its composition is secondary, all two- and four-legged pack members are equally accepted. Only the children of the family deserve special mention.
He treats them carefully and patiently – as with all other dog breeds, the appropriate socialization lays the early foundation. One of the outstanding characteristics of the Wolfsspitz is its location. He seeks closeness to people and is loyal to his home; he does not poach or stray. The Wolfsspitz has a soft spot for joint activities. Be it in dog sport with all its facets, in companion dog or tracking training, or on long-distance hikes. The abundant dense undercoat ensures that the top hair sticks out. In addition, a clear collar surrounds the neck and shoulders of the Wolfspitz. The longer hair on the legs and the rump with the bushy tail completes the picture of the square-looking physique.
The property of the dry and wet fur, that it has very little odor, is pleasant. Although the four-legged companion is considered a good feed converter, the stately impression of its true dimensions is deceptive. In addition to the bold facial expression of the Spitz, which weighs 16 to 25 kilograms and is approximately 44 to 55 centimeters at the shoulder, its markings are a distinctive breed characteristic.
The cloudy gray coloring is the result of the interplay of silver-grey and black hair tips. The black muzzle and the black ears stand out in this play of colors. Lighter areas around the neck and on the underside of the tail carried high over the back and on the trousers complete the appearance of the four-legged friend.
