Saarloos Wolfhound

This dog only reaches its psychological and physical maturity at the age of about three years. Find out everything about the behavior, character, activity and exercise needs, training, and care of the Saarloos Wolfhound dog breed in the profile.

The Saarlooswolfhond originated from a cross between Russian wolves and German shepherds. The name was given by the first breeder, Leendert Saarloos, who regarded the shepherd dogs as too humanized and wanted to breed back natural characteristics. He wanted to create a better working dog. Initially, these dogs were actually used as working dogs, e.g. as guide dogs for the blind, but it quickly became apparent that the proportion of wolf blood was too high to be able to use them as reliable working dogs. The breed was recognized in 1975.
